Fast forward to 2020, and the term "influencer" emerged, partially due to limited activities during the pandemic, which led many to use Instagram as an alternative to TikTok. While many TikTok creators were often seen as cringe-worthy, inappropriate, or lacking substance, the Indian government did not ban TikTok until June 2020, when concerns about data privacy arose. Although TikTok was a lucrative platform, it negatively affected the youth and significantly increased the screen time of millions of Indians. Unfortunately, the Indian government hasn't consistently prioritized the welfare of its youth, as corruption runs rampant among politicians and bureaucrats, regardless of their political affiliation.
India’s culture is evolving, influenced by rising false feminism, and Generation Alpha is challenging traditional perceptions of success linked solely to conventional jobs. News channels are capitalizing on the IGL controversy for TRP gains, young people are discussing it on social media, and YouTubers are uploading long videos on the topic. Ultimately, this controversy will likely be forgotten within a few months. It’s essential to understand that Ranveer Allahbadia is not a saint, as very few individuals can be deemed genuinely religious. Although his expressions during the podcast may be odd, he has not shared inappropriate content on his channel. Many of his earlier videos, which focus on personal development, fashion, and spirituality, are genuinely helpful. There is a significant distinction between being a fan of someone and blindly following a person.

Most of the viewers of these YouTube content creators are urban youth from Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 cities. I recall Ranveer Allahbadia mentioning in one of his videos that young people in Indian villages don’t even know who he is, despite his millions of subscribers. Additionally, India lacks a culture of public physical intimacy. Recently, a video of a couple kissing in a Kolkata metro station went viral, creating a media sensation. Such incidents rarely make headlines in Western countries as public displays of affection do not attract similar attention. Interestingly, India has one of the highest rates of pornography consumption worldwide, with the largest audience for adult content being Indian viewers. Therefore, before taking action against IGL, the government should consider banning adult sites first.
India’s Got Latent (IGL) has sparked significant controversy online, especially among young people. About six years ago, the popular YouTube channel AIB also faced backlash, ultimately leading to its permanent closure. At that time, Millennials born in the 1990s were college students, while Generation Z was still in school. Millennials understood that AIB videos were generally not family-friendly, yet they didn’t feel awkward or uncomfortable despite the exposure to various slang words. Before the pandemic, many Millennials watched both television and YouTube, but discussing their YouTube viewing habits or favorite YouTubers in public was uncommon.
Many YouTubers and Instagram creators who started producing content during 2020 have gained considerable fame and wealth in 2023–2024, often regardless of content quality. Indian YouTubers can earn lakhs of rupees monthly mainly because their audiences are young people, many of whom lack alternative entertainment options and have limited social lives. These viewers are generally uninterested in scripted reality shows, regressive television serials, or irrelevant news channels. Traditional media has begun to recognize the influence of content creators, inviting them to participate in reality shows and even act in films. Content creation has evolved into a booming billion-dollar industry in India. However, the quality of content from many YouTubers seems to be declining. It is important to note that a career in the creative field typically has a defined lifespan, unlike government jobs, which can last for decades, with fixed salaries and hours.

I haven’t watched the entire episode of India’s Got Latent featuring Ranveer Allahbadia, but I did see the clip where he asked about parents having sex. I have been following Beer Biceps’ content for the last three years. It’s crucial to remember that most stand-up comedians cater to young social media users. Many well-known comedians started on Comedy Circus, and Comedy Nights that aired on Sony, and Colors channels, and some later took on supporting roles in films, they didn’t achieve the same level of fame as today’s top YouTubers. We cannot directly compare television audiences with YouTube audiences. Many Baby Boomers and members of Generation X might not recognize famous YouTubers but can name Bollywood and television serial actors. These older generations watch news channels regularly, while young people under 30 rarely tune into television news. Consequently, news channels have aired the India's Got Latent controversy to engage the youth and improve their TRP ratings.
